Benching Justin Fields would be fine if his replacement wasn't the ghost of Russell Wilson

Justin Fields just can't catch a break. Sent out of Chicago for #1 overall pick Caleb Williams, Fields has not been spectacular, but certainly not bad in Pittsburgh. He's 4-2 as the starter, averaging 184 passing yards per game with 10 total TD's to only 1 INT and 6.9 yards per attempt. These are typical Fields numbers, the same numbers we were told in Chicago were the fault of poor coaching, poor game planning, poor o-line, poor ... you get the idea.

Is there room for improvement over what Fields has brought to Pittsburgh? Absolutely. Has Russell Wilson shown he's capable of providing that improvement? Well...

Russell Wilson is 35 years old and trending downward. From 2015-2020 Wilson was a star in Seattle, averaging 4000 yards passing with 33 passing TDs and 9 INTs per season. Seattle's front office thought his skills were declining and gave up on him -- and they were right, he's been a shell of himself ever since.

In 3 seasons since the 2020 season, he's played 1 season in Seattle and 2 in Denver. During this time he's averaged 3,236 yards passing with 22 passing TDs and 8 INTs per season. His yards per attempt have declined every year: 7.8 in 2021, 7.3 in 2022, and 6.9 in 2023.

Mike Tomlin is a fantastic coach and Pittsburgh has been a successful program for a long time. I'm sure he knows something we don't as it pertains to Fields and Wilson, I just can't for the life of me figure out what that is at the moment.
